Heritages and Museums

The Alte Feste (Old Fortress) is a fortress and museum in downtown Windhoek, the capital of Namibia. The building was designed by captain Curt von François to serve as headquarters of the imperial German Schutztruppe (colonial military force) during German colonization of South-West Africa.

The Owela Museum in Windhoek covers many aspects of Namibian life over the ages. For instance, their Display Centre showcases an exhibition of the importance of the cheetah in Namibian ecology, compiled by the Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF).

The Equestrian Monument, more commonly known under its German original name Reiterdenkmal and the name Südwester Reiter (Rider of South-West), is a statue in Windhoek, the capital of Namibia. It was inaugurated on 27 January 1912, the birthday of German emperor Wilhelm II. The monument honours the soldiers and civilians that died on the German side of the Herero and Namaqua War of 1904–1907, a situation that caused controversy about its current role in a democratic Namibia that has shed its colonial occupation and gained independence.

Heroes Acre From the 7th August 1884 to 21st March 1990 (105 years 226 days) Namibia was under continued colonial occupation. The final hurdle for independence took over 43 years to overcome, of which 23 years and 225 days were spent in armed conflict. Heroes Acre is an official war memorial of the government of Namibia and is located in the Auas Mountains, less than 10km south of the capital city of Windhoek. The idea for such a memorial was suggested by the founding father, President Sam Nujoma on a visit to Zimbabwe in 1997.

The National Museum of Namibia is housed in Windhoek’s oldest surviving building, dating from the early 1890s, and originally served as the headquarters of the German Schutztruppe. The rest of the museum contains memorabilia and photos from the colonial period as well as indigenous artefacts. The museum has display galleries that cover rock art, the history of the liberation struggle, the Namibians who were on Robben Island, the UN’s role in Namibia’s independence process, rock art and social history.
